DESCRIPTION:

There are multiple ways in which inequities manifest in our schools. One of them is in special education identification. Every year many school districts are identified for their disproportionate representation of students of color in special education.

Learn how the State of Wisconsin has committed to supporting our schools and what can parents and guardians need to know.

PRESENTER:

Ananda Mirilli works for the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (DPI) as a Grant Director of the WI Network, a statewide initiative that works to address racial disproportionality in special education and discipline.

Ananda holds a Master’s Degree in Education Leadership and Policy Analysis from the University of Wisconsin and a Bachelor’s Degree in Human Services and Psychology.

Through her coordination of family and community leadership efforts for the Madison Metropolitan School District, Ananda implemented a leadership pipeline for parents while bridging their relationship and access to community resources. A Restorative Justice Circle expert, she has facilitated trainings for youth and adults to engage in building community, developing leadership and taking part in a liberation process for all people. Ananda strongly believes that by being in community and sharing our experiences, we can co-create meaningful relationships, foster supportive and empowered communities and enhance school and community climate.
