The purpose of this presentation is to describe characteristics of individuals whohave ASDWe will focus on the critical aspects of communication that may be challenging to individuals with ASD and discuss how to support individuals who exhibit challenging behavior. 


Shannon Stuart is a professor of special education at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. She has been in the department since 1999 and developed the autism specialist certificate graduate program in 2004. She has worked with individuals who have autism spectrum disorders (ASD) since 1987. One of her favorite quotes is from Temple Grandin's book, "The Way I See It: A Personal Look at Autism & Asperger's". "What would happen if the autism gene was eliminated from the gener pool? You would have a buch of people standing around in a cave, chatting and socializing and not getting anything done." - Temple Grandin
