Culturally responsive family engagement is the cornerstone of successful partnerships, which have been shown to have benefits for student achievement and strengthening relationships between families and schools. This session will provide strategies and resources for supporting strong collaboration between educators and families from all of Wisconsin’s richly diverse backgrounds. In addition, the session will explore the idea of culture, the barriers that arise from cultural bias, and the ways that engaging multiple cultures in education can serve to promote excellence for all. Several evidence based family engagement practices which include culturally responsive themes will be discussed.

Kedibonye Carpenter is the Statewide Multicultural Specialist with WI FACETS, where she is responsible for coordinating trainings statewide to increase the knowledge and engagement of families of students with disabilities. She works directly with underserved families and groups in the state as well as with schools and districts to help develop partnering and leadership capabilities for all stakeholders to enhance the special education experience.
