Some children may need extra help in school through special education. Special education is for children who have a disability. Schools must follow federal and state laws to decide if a child is eligible for special education. This module is the first in the Individualized Education Program (IEP) Mini Modules Series and covers some of the basics of special education: federal and state laws, the definition of special education and other important terms (free appropriate public education, least restrictive environment, individualized education program), eligibility, and the special education timeline.
