For those seeking training for home language interpreters for families at IEP meetings, Wisconsin DPI has partnered with WI FACETS, LEAs, and other organizations to develop a one-day training for home language interpreters who interpret for families at IEP meetings. Language interpretation training is a requirement to meet the provisions outlined in Wisconsin’s DPI’s Providing Language Assistance to Parents guidance document. The training provides increased awareness of state and federal laws, regulations and policies related to the educational rights of students who receive special education through an IEP and who may also be English Language Learners. The training also provides increased knowledge of legal responsibilities and requirements related to translation and interpretation of special education, terms, concepts, tools, and resources for interpreters. Finally, the training supports improved skills to handle common ethical considerations while interpreting IEP meetings.

We have one final Home Language Interpreter training session scheduled for the 2023-24 school year. For more information and to register, please select the linked date below.

In-person training:

If you are interested in bringing this training to your area in the 2024-25 school year, please contact Lori Karcher at [email protected].

WI FACETS encourages districts to participate in the following networking opportunities for Home Language Interpreters and Translators. The networks of interpreters are a fabulous resource for continued professional development to better serve Wisconsin Families and Communities.

In addition to providing Immigrant and Multilingual Learners with high-quality teaching and learning experiences, school districts are required, to the extent practicable, to communicate with parents in a language they can understand. If a written translation is not provided, an oral interpretation should be made available whenever needed. As a result, the Interpreter/Translator Network will come together to discuss Wisconsin’s K-12 Translation and Interpretation requirements, Build Staff Capacity, Network, Share Ideas, Resources, and explore practice-based case studies in addition to chapters from both (a) The Community Interpreter: An International Textbook, and (b) The Community Interpreter: An International Workbook. All materials will be provided. We look forward to exploring these topics with you!
