Effective communication skills are vital to a student’s educational success. This presentation will navigate the comprehensive special education evaluation process from accurate identification to the collective development of an IEP that impacts a student’s communication skills. Participants will discover ways to foster collaborative communication among IEP team members throughout the process.

Learning objectives:

  • Review the basic framework of comprehensive special education evaluation
  • Understand the CCR-IEP 5-Step Process and how to apply it during IEP meeting discussions
  • Discover ways to foster collaborative communication with all IEP team members throughout the IEP process

Presenter: Dawn E. Merth-Johnson

Dawn Merth-Johnson, MA, CCC-SLP, is a speech-language pathologist and Education Consultant for the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction. She has 28 years of clinical and supervisory experience in schools, long-term rehabilitation, and at the university level. Merth-Johnson presents on topics related to leadership, advocacy, and clinical practice. She serves on the WSHA Board as the State Education Advocacy Co-Leader (Co-SEAL) for Wisconsin and is the ASHA SEAL Champion of the Midwest region.
