Some children may need extra help in school through special education.  Special education is for children who have a disability. Schools must follow federal and state laws to decide if a child is eligible for special education.  This module in the Individualized Education Program (IEP) Mini Modules Series covers some of the basics of special education: federal and state laws, the definition of important terms (special education, free appropriate public education, least restrictive environment, individualized education program), eligibility, and the special education timeline.
