Description:

A functional behavioral assessment (FBA) is an important tool for IEP teams to help to identify and understand the function and root cause of behaviors that interfere with a student’s learning. The FBA is used to gather information about the things that influence a student’s behavior. For a student with a disability, the results of the FBA are used to develop IEP goals and services and, if needed, a behavior intervention plan (BIP). Understanding the FBA and BIP process will help parents and caregivers be informed partners in the IEP process and help schools meet their child’s needs.

Una Evaluación Funcional del Comportamiento (FBA, por sus siglas en inglés) es una herramienta importante para los equipos del IEP, ya que ayuda a identificar y comprender la función y la causa raíz de los comportamientos que interfieren con el aprendizaje del estudiante. La FBA se utiliza para recopilar información sobre los factores que influyen en el comportamiento del estudiante. En el caso de un estudiante con una discapacidad, los resultados de la FBA se utilizan para desarrollar metas y servicios en el IEP y, si es necesario, un Plan de Intervención Conductual (BIP, por sus siglas en inglés). Presenters:

Tim Peerenboom obtained a bachelor’s degree from the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse in 2002 and went on to earn two Master’s degrees; one in School Psychology from UW Stout in 2003 and one in Educational Leadership from Cardinal Stritch University in 2009. Prior to joining the DPI, Tim has served as a School Psychologist, Autism Specialist and Director of Special Education and Pupil Services. He has served in urban, rural and suburban school districts spanning from Portland, OR to Washington, D.C. Now back home in Wisconsin, Tim enjoys spending time with friends and family, especially his wife and two children.

Eva Shaw is a consultant on the Special Education Team at the Wisconsin DPI. Her role focuses on services and supports related to social and emotional learning for students with IEPs, autism, emotional behavioral disabilities, positive behavioral interventions and supports, and alternatives to exclusionary practices. She has worked in the field of special education for over 30 years, and has had the privilege to serve children, families, and schools in several states and in a wide variety of roles. She has served as a special education teacher, as a program support teacher and diagnostician, and in an administrative role as a special education supervisor.
