Description: This workshop will highlight the basic framework of comprehensive special education evaluations with a particular focus on the criteria for a specific learning disability. Participants will discover ways to be actively involved throughout the evaluation process.

Learning objectives:

  1. Understand the basic framework of comprehensive special education evaluation
  2. Recognize the unique factors related to specific learning disability within the context of comprehensive special education evaluation
  3. Discover ways to be actively involved in the comprehensive special education evaluation process

Presenters:

Rose Kilmurray, DPI

Rose Kilmurray has 17 years of experience as a special education teacher and administrator. She holds a bachelor’s degree in special education through UW–Eau Claire, a master’s with an emphasis on literacy from UW–Stout, and a doctorate in educational sustainability from UW-Stevens Point. Rose has delivered training and presentations at the local and state levels on topics including UDL, special education systems, accessibility, reading instruction, and social-emotional learning. Rose currently serves on the Wisconsin Council for Exceptional Children membership committee. She is a trained facilitator for the National SEED Project (Seeking Educational Equity and Diversity) and has conducted SEED training in collaboration with CESA 10 and the Ho-Chunk Nation.

Dawn Merth-Johnson, Iris Jacobson, and Rose Kilmurray are Education Consultants on the Special Education Team at the Department of Public Instruction. All three presenters have expertise in comprehensive special education evaluations.
