Description:

Shine Down? Sabaton? Ozzy? They are loud and (sometimes) misunderstood. How would families react if part of a recovery/wellness plan was listening to heavy metal music? Hunter has many different strategies to deal with depression, anxiety, and suicidal ideation as well as just dealing with LIFE! This session will provide examples of hard rock music and how it helps Hunter survive and get through life. His dad will also join him to bring in the family’s perspective. Come listen, reflect, and learn how Hunter has learned to use music and maybe leave with some new favorites from his Mental Health Playlist (available on Spotify).

Presenters:

Tim Markle is founder and director of Forgiveness Factor. Forgiveness Factor exists to promote forgiveness as a way to live mentally well. Tim teaches classes, workshops, seminars and speaks about forgiveness, suicide prevention, and addiction recovery in Wisconsin, nationally, and internationally.

Hunter Markle is a mental health self-advocate who wants to share what he has learned to help others. He is autistic and is challenged with anxiety, depression, and has experienced hospitalization for suicidal ideation.

Learning Objectives:

  • Consider the connection of music (even hard rock) to mental health.
  • Learn from one family’s experience the influence of music in keeping mentally healthy.
